Finance Council and Pastoral Council have been aware of our aging boiler for a number of years and have discussed replacement periodically. In 2020, the age of the air conditioning units serving the church and rectory began getting more attention due to high electricity bills and concerns about maintenance. All of the equipment was at or beyond its projected life. Local HVAC contractors insisted that they would not replace the entire system without an engineering study and design.
Both the COVID pandemic and the Derecho storm of 2020 delayed progress on our HVAC project. Because so many contractors were working to repair the massive damage done by the Derecho, it took a long time to get our system studied. Eventually, we were able to engage Modus Engineering of Des Moines (with an office in Waterloo) to make a proposal with three options for replacing our present HVAC system. Alex Matheson from Modus presented the three options to Finance Council on May 26, 2022.
